Basic Components of Planning

This lesson introduces providers to the basic components of planning a program for young children. To be an effective leader and planner, you need to be what is known as an intentional teacher. This means you are purposeful in all aspects of your job. In particular, intentionality is needed to plan a program that supports children’s growth and development. It also means you respect and honor the role of play in children’s learning and plan your program to include sustained periods of both indoor and outdoor play.

As you plan for children, you rely on a balance of instructional techniques. You plan for both child-initiated and teacher-directed instruction. In addition, you plan activities that involve the whole group, small groups, pairs of children working together, and individual, one-on-one instruction. The lesson concludes with guidance on how to select activities for children based on their ages, individual needs, curriculum goals and early learning standards.
