Experience with Referrals

Have you ever had to refer a child for an evaluation because of a developmental concern? Share you experience. What did you do? What happened? As you share your experience, remember to maintain confidentiality for all children and families.

I have not experienced this yet.

I have not had a referral yet

no i have not.

This was my first year working for head start. I have not had the opportunity to refer any students. If I do see any concerns I bring them up with my lead teacher and she assesses the situation and speaks to the parents accordingly. We have a speech therapist come in to our center once a week to work with those that need it. My lead teacher did refer a child to another program this last year so that he can get more help than what we can offer him and his mom was on board with it.

I have a child who shows concerns in a couple different areas. I first talked with the childs parents to see if they have noticed anything or have any concerns of their own. After they expressed their concerns I sent a referral form to our education manager in our center to start the process. We are currently in the middle of the process but working closely with our education team and the parents to be as proactive as we can until we have an official plan in place.

In my classroom we work closely with our local special education corporation. We have spots reserved for this corporation to place children with disabilities into our room with average children and usually a paraprofessional too. The paraprofessional is there to help with any extra support the children placed by them may need. Many times we see some red flags with some of the children that have signed up within the average public. We usually start by alerting our on site speech pathologist or our special education specialist of our concerns. If they step in and see some of the same concerns, we go from there getting the child any extra support they may need.

I have not written a referral yet

i haven't had the opportunity to make a referral yet.

I have had the experience of referring a child, whereas family wasn't quit on board at first but once more observations were made, they understood and let the child have further services apply where it was found that the child did in fact have a serious delay autism spectrum delays.

I have not made a referral yet.

I have not yet made a referral for a child.

I have once recommended to a parent to have their child screened to see if they needed to meet with the speech therapist who works with the children at our center. They were screened and were set to start speech but unfortunately the parents were unable to bring them in on time or consistently for them to participate in speech. The child would definitely benefit from a more consistent schedule and being able to attend speech.

So far, I have not felt the need to refer anyone, but it will be good to know about the process for if/when such action is required in the future.

I also have not had to refer any of my students at this time, but it is very good to know the process. I do however have a child in my room who is behind in her language development, and she is receiving services. I can see why she needed services and I can also talk with her speech therapist about things she is doing to help her. It has been a great learning experience for me as a new teacher.

I have not had to do a referral yet. I do feel as though two of my children will need one. I feel they are both at risk of being on the Austism Spectrum or are already there.

i have never had to do a referral

I haven't did a referral for the center but I did a referral for my grandson. he had to get service by the time he was 5 his speech was fine.

I haven't had to refer a child. I did speak with a mother on her thoughts about maybe getting her son some help but she shut me down and said he was fine

I did refer a child with the help of our director at another center The child was able to get help The child came in stuttering, timid and not able to focus for a good while I took the child under my wings taking time with her showing no partiality towards her the mother was in denial. I loved just spending more time made good friends, loving her. She received the proper help she needed. She was promoted and was the top student honoree in my class. I still love her though I do not see her She was able ato write her name, color not perfect but the best she could, she used the phonic sounds letter recognition add etc,

no i have not

as of right now I haven't refer a child but in case if it comes up, I would know what to do.

I had to refer a child for a because of a developmental concern due the child having autism. I had never had to refer a child for a developmental concern and I had never dealt with a child that had autism. Once I determined the child was autistic, I spoke to the child's parent to find out if the parent was aware. I relayed to them that the child was autistic and that they may want to consider getting some professional help.

No.I had never had to refer a child for evaluautio

I have not had a need to refer any children.

Yes. Discussed with teachers first and made observations and documented. Conferenced with parents and teachers. Discussed our concerns based on CDC developmental milestones and our documentations. Parents at first were taken aback as they didn't think their child was behind. After reviewing checksheet, our observations and theirs from home, it was agreed to see their doctor and to contact their school district for screening.

I have not had to make a referral because I am only a float.

same.

I had no need to refer a child

I have not necessarily referred a child myself but I had concerns and when I spoke with the parent, they said he had an appointment for a screening. We are still waiting on the results.

ive never had to refer a child before

I have never had to refer a child for evaluation .I it was done by a lead .The information I know now will help me to know what to look for in the future .

I have tried to refer a child with a speech disorder and I was told that they were to young to be tested and that I should wait until he was in Kindergarten. I even talked with principal and pretty much was told me thats what they say we have to go with it. You can clearly hear in the child constant stuttering and it wasn't just how old he was

I once had to refer a family for evaluation for a student who had multiple social emotion delays as well as speech delays. The family was very receptive to the concern and we were able to get the student the help he needed!

N/A

I have had a few instances where I needed to refer a child for a suspected developmental delay. Usually, I would meet with the multidisciplinary team of fellow teachers to discuss the concern. The parents would then be brought in and the team would discuss our concerns with them. Most of the time, parents share our concerns and are grateful for the referral and information provided. There have been a few occasions where parents were resistant to any type of intervention. Those cases were very frustrating because It is almost always in the best interest of the child to have early referral and intervention if necessary.
