Experience with Referrals

Have you ever had to refer a child for an evaluation because of a developmental concern? Share you experience. What did you do? What happened? As you share your experience, remember to maintain confidentiality for all children and families.

I have had to refer a few children over the years. I first ensure to gather as much information about the child as possible. I ensure that we have documentation of what the child is doing/not doing or saying/not saying. We do some testing with the child in the classroom to get a better idea. We will then talk with our education manager. We will bring it up during a conference with the parent to see what they are seeing at home and to find out first if they have any concerns, before we share our documentation and our concerns for what we are witnessing in the classroom. We have resources directly available to us at our center for speech and developmental delays. We can refer straight to them for further evaluation.

I have never had to refer a child for an evaluation. I am an assistant teacher in my second month of assisting.

We have had several students in our program who have needed a referral for a developmental concern. We have a discussion with our program director who sets up a conference with the families. We will sit down with them and discuss the progress the child has made as well as the positive things we have seen. Then we discuss the areas of concern, and ask if the parents share that concern . We give examples and talk about what the parents have seen at home. Then we discuss some services that may be available and the next steps for the parent to take.

I am not a lead teacher, but have helped with the evaluations and talking to parents about speech problems. It is always difficult to talk about and for parents to hear, but I can speak from personal experience because my son had a speech problem. And we know the importance of them receiving help.

In all my years I have not had this experience.

During conferences, The head teacher had to recommend one of the students that had difficulty communicating with otherS. They had a bit of a fluency problem.

Personally I have never had to refer a child for an evaluation. But i have had children in my classroom that have beem referred for an evalutation at that go to either speech class or one of the amazing programs we have to help children with delays, or disoreders.

I have not yet had to refer a child to an "outside" expert for an evaluation. If I have a concern, I first communicate with a a parent (s). The parents take over the problem and make contact with appropriate professionals. I stay in close contact with the family and offer my assistance whenever and wherever necessary.

I had a child with a speech delay. I referred the parents to a speech therapist. The parents were thankful. This child said very few words and when he did, it has hard to understand what he was saying. The therapist saw him twice a week and after about 2 months I started to notice a big difference. This child's vocabulary increased from about 5-8 words to 12-15.

We work closely with our resources within the school system. If we see a child struggling we refer them and someone will come out to assess them.

I have not had to refer a child for a developmental concern evaluation. If I have to, I would like to gather as much information as I can, then sit down with the director and parents in a private meeting and explain what I have noticed and what concerns I have; I would ask the parents and director for feedback.

no I havent

The first step was I had asked our programs special needs coordinator to come and step in the classroom to observe a child I had been concerned about for awhile. After a few observations over the course of two months, and talking with the family advocate and parent, we started having meeting with a speech therapist who observed the child and was able to agree with our special need coordinator and family advocate that some help was going to be needed, help with some speech delays.

no i have not refered a child

No, I never heard about a developmental concern. And sure I will keep confidentially. The privacy is essential in these kind of cases.

No

I have not had to refer a child for any type of developmental delay

Yes I had to refer a child for evaluation. I had notice that the child was not meeting several milestone at the time that we did our quarterly reviews so I scheduled with a professional to see what his teachers could do to help and see if they were seeing the same thing that we were at the center. After that we scheduled to meet with the parents. The parents were reluctant to hear anything that we were saying and they dismissed all of our concerns. The child never received help and the child is still behind in his milestones.

We have had children with developmental concerns as it relates to their language. Their social and emotional development was on track but the child was struggling articulating words and wasn't understandable to a 25% level at the age of 3. We worked with speech coaches in the classroom to help this child.

I never have dealt with a situation like this

I have not had this experience.

I've known that a child may need a referral, but never did one myself due to my position. I know there is a packet that needs to be filled out.

No i haven't ever had too.

I haven't had to refer a child for an evaluation due to a development concern. If I have to do this, I would like to talk to the child's parents/guardians one on one about my concerns about what I have noticed with the child and what I would recommend they do and how things can be better for the child.

Ive never sent a child to get an evaluation yet.

I have never had to refer a child for an evaluation because of a development concerns. Have not experience that just yet. If I was then I would write a note to their parents regarding to the problem of their child and have a talk with them as well to help the student as soon as possible.

I am new to childcare and have not yet had to refer a child. With that being said, we do have assessments coming up and I do have two children in mind who could use a speech referral and assessment

We have had a child with articulation disorder, we did an assessment and talked with the parents. They were aware of the problem and appreciated our efforts to help their child. A speech therapist came to our school to work with the child.

Im looking forward to taking my personal experience into a classroom.

I did have to refer a child. We had the inclusion specialist come and watch her for an entire afternoon. She saw somethings wrong and discussed with the parents and the parents declined follow up or referrals. I still have this child 2 years later and she is still not progressing like she should.
