Essentials of Leadership - Cultural Competence Discussion

Share with your colleagues an example or two of generational, racial, or cultural differences which have arisen in your place of work (former or current).

I have a Mexican student and I had to explain to his parents about the Valentines Day tradition about giving everyone a card.

Where I work is pretty diverse and we all get along just fine. We have different cultural backgrounds and ages.

We have a mixture of generations and to be honest all get along very well.

In a former center I worked at in England, we had american staff and England's native staff, they all were very involved in their own groups and often made american's feel unwelcome at first, even though it was an american daycare on the base.

This was from the younger age groups, however, the older age groups were slow to be welcoming as well.

In my work place there are definitely clicks between teachers. Some are very open with everyone, others stay within their own race for example at meetings it almost feels segregated.

One of the culture I have from the country where I came from was, it is rude to call your client or whoever comes to you by its name alone without using a title as "ma'am or sir" before their names.

At my last job, I had to speak with my younger teachers about how to address our older parents and grandparents using Mr. or Mrs.

We have several teachers who are new to this country. They arrive at least 10 minutes early to staff meetings to make sure they are on time. Our younger staff members are always late so the meetings start late. I should always start the meeting on time but the younger teachers really need to be involved in our discussions.

At staff meetings, the teachers sit with their friends, which are usually of the same race. It feels exclusive to me but I don’t want to control where staff sit.
