Description

Hayao Miyazaki: The Art of Anime Storytelling studies of one of Japan’s most celebrated animators. As Miyazaki’s career progressed, he created a signature visual and thematic style that would make him one of the most beloved international animators of all time. The course examines Miyazaki’s work both as literary pieces - examining the elements of compelling storytelling; and as a visual medium - exploring the facets of engaging animation. Any art form is, by essence, an extension of its creator. This is especially true of Miyazaki. Consequently, exploration of Japanese culture and Miyazaki’s life will also be included in class presentations and discussions.

The class will watch Miyazaki’s films chronologically so we can experience his growth as an animator and storyteller. Course work includes viewing the films, completing short quizzes after each movie, and writing responses to each film.
