Active Learning: The HOMES Scale

What factors in your classroom may exist that contribute to children’s challenging behaviors?

Using the HOMES Scale, what changes would reduce challenging behaviors in your classroom?

We have an wide open classroom to where the kids are able to run, jump and climb to get their energy out, but they continue to hit, push and lay on each other. Maybe if i put more toys, books and sensory things out so they can have things to play with instead of hitting each other.

I think the layout of the room create some behavioral problems. I also believe that using the holmes scale we could have some more memorable ideas included in our class.

honestly the classrooms that im currently working in have alot of toys and most of them are toys that do not teach the kids anything all they do is cause the children to fight.

I think there are too much toys .

I don't have a classroom yet

don't have a classroom

I don't have a classroom yet

No classroom yet, but if I did I would have an area of play , blocks , puppets, etc.., a reading nook, an area for counting objects and a sensory bin that would change weekly or every few days.

Sometimes we forget abut their need to move.

I really like the HOMES scale. In my classroom, I think there may be an overwhelming amount of toys at each center, so I would like to try to eliminate that feeling. I also would like to incorporate more open-ended artwork and crafts, because much of what I do has an end product in mind. (I work with toddlers)

In the classroom there is a lot of toys for each center. This can cause an over whelming feeling.

I rotate toys, dress up, books and puzzles in centers every month. I try not to have too many in each center but also enough to where they don't get bored.

I don't currently have a classroom, but to many toys or materials being out could contribute or the classroom being to busy.

I will try that

I don't have a classroom yet

inever heard of the HOMES scale before, but it is very informative and can be use productively

I don't have a classroom yet

I work with infants the ones that can crawl go to the toy shelves and pull out a toys and taste it throw it away and go for another one

I don't think that it's open-ended enough. All of the projects that I do have a certain end result in mind. I'm not letting the kids be as creative as they could be.

There is often a large mess of toys, so having them clean up their toys more frequently may create more space for play and cause less chaos.

My classroom is tight with so much to do in each direction

My classroom is a bit tight so children may feel overwhelmed in the small spaces.

The space, other children and the noise may contribute to challenging behavior. More hands on activities and letting children express themselves would reduce challenging behaviors

What factors in your classroom may exist that contribute to children’s challenging behaviors?

I work with infants.

Using the HOMES Scale, what changes would reduce challenging behaviors in your classroom?

Once they are older I can introduce new ideas. I do pay attention to what colors, sounds, and materials they like. When I make sensory boards and activities I try and include things they like.

One of the main factors that will contribute to behavior challenges in our classroom is that the children don't have the ability to express their issues due to lack of language skills. The HOMES scale would be useful in developing tasks for the children to do on their own and better build their skills.

I think using HOMES in the classroom will be very helpful when planning.

I will incorporate the HOMES into my classroom. It helps to break down and simplify a more balanced classroom.

I have never heard or the HOMES scale, however will start

I work with infants.

I really apreciatte the HOMES idea. I didn't use yet, but I will

with 12 kids in the classroom ages varying from 1 to 3 year-old it can be very busy and even chaotic at times, just like Times Squares; all of these can create challenging behaviors especially on those kids that feel left out. With the HOMES scale implemented in our classroom those challenging behaviors would be changed because there would be more activities meeting the HOMES: More sensory activities, more engaging activities encouraging movement and more meaningful activities.

The home square helps me to have and create a busy classroom

Our classroom is like times square in a way that is it busy, colorful and sometimes chaotic. Our classroom could be more interactive and we could place more fun entertaining objects in the room. More sensory activities would be great for out children as well.

I feel we may have too many toys in some areas therefore making the children feel overwhelmed at times with how many options they really have.

the amount of toys in the sensory area sometimes causes the students to fight over the toys.

I too have a tight classroom, we switch out toys weekly to try and keep them from getting bored. We have an area for physical activity, a reading nook and an area for circle time. We do a craft almost daily and try to stick with a theme. we have 7 boys and 3 girls so it is usually boy oriented, but we do bring in baby dolls and dress up that the boys engage in as well. We need more open ended activitys i think. We do well in the sensory area.

I think for in our infant room the sensory in the homes scale would help our babies as well as open ended possibilities. We should also find what interests them so they stay engage and we have to let them move around! So maybe having them play with snow and let them touch it and get a few tools they can use with it and just see what they do.

I Like the HOME idea, I feel like we should let the kids be hand on that's how they will start learning about more things.

There may be too many centers available in a classroom, or too many choices within a center. Some of the schedule for the day may be too child-lead so that the activity doesn't have much meaning.

I like the idea of the HOMES scale, though we do not have that many challenges in my classroom. I do let the children be hands on and try to let them do what they want in a healthy way.

I think some of the children are not cahllenged enough and some are feeling too challenged. I do not move things around so they always know where things are. I will try to meet each child where they are developmentally so that they all learn the same things but at thier own levels.

The HOMES scale helps to create a useful classroom with hands on activities.

Using the HOMES scale whole be a great way to keep the kids interested and not bored.

Using the HOMES scale to come up with classroom activities is a great way to make sure that the children are fully engaged and not bored. This could help with behaviors that are challenging because it could grasp the mind of the child that is having a challenging moment.

Working with infants I think the HOMES method could be good as long as it is used with safe and natural elements for learning. Since the infants can't really follow guidelines, every activity is pretty much open-ended.

HOMES scale helps with ideas to make since the classrooms are not huge it gives children the options of doing different things with sensory oriented things or hands on activities

My space is not bery large either and I fell that the children are acting out because they need more room to do certain activites.

Not much space and center I believe is one of the factors that gives some of my children in the classroom a challenging behaviors. Thanks for the HOME scale to help me give some ideas on how to resolve the issues that we encounter every now and then.

Our room is a little on thesmall side so wetry to switch up where certain bins are located along with cribs an chairs. Maybe if we move the room around less it will help the children so they aren't confused.

I think the children are overwhelmed and dont like the idea of change and they cannot adapt to change. but i do not know whats going in the classroom to make the children change their behavior. I would have to work closely with my coworkers and director to help fix the the problem.
