I’m not sure what factors in my classroom are contributing to challenging behavior. I do wonder sometimes if I am meeting each child where they are developmentally. Maybe the defiance comes from not being challenged enough or being challenged too much. I think I will try bringing in some different materials every 2 or 3 weeks. I would also like to do some additional observations to see if I am meeting different children’s developmental needs. I think some of my kids may be getting bored – I’m going to have to up my game!!

I wonder if the kids in my classroom are just overwhelmed. I try to keep the classroom really engaging, vibrant, and active. There’s always music playing and lots going on. Maybe I am overdoing it a bit for some of the kids. Clearly time-out and distraction are not working. In addition to maybe too much stimulation, no wonder some of the kids are acting out!! I’m going to bring down the number of things going on in the classroom – first thing that goes is the lively music. It’s starting to get on my nerves anyway.

We just moved to a new room which is much smaller than our old room because enrollment is low. In addition to the change, the room is small and cramped and we don’t have as many centers as we did in the old room. Maybe the kids are overwhelmed with change and bored at the same time, is that possible? Clearly my kids are missing some of the space we used to have and the variety of materials we had in the other room. I’m going to have to work my director and assistant teacher to figure out how to solve this.
