In partnership with Voices Institute and Kids Hope Alliance, The Partnership for Child Health - Jacksonville System of Care presents:
Supporting Children and Families Experiencing Racial Stress and Trauma. (Community Parenting)
With the advent of technology, communities of color have been overwhelmed by media images of racial oppression and on-going negative messaging of people of color. Experiencing and even witnessing racial incidents of discrimination can lead to racial stress and trauma. Like adults, the wounds of racial stress and trauma impact the physical, mental, social, emotional, and spiritual well-being of children and youth as well. Parents need brave and gracious space to discuss the challenges of parenting during this time of racial unrest. Some parents/caregivers mention “the talk” that they must have with their children about living in an unjust world and feeling that they are taking away their child’s innocence. It is critical that parents/caregivers are equipped with skills and tools to discuss racial trauma offering hope and healing to their children.
Participants will be able to:
1) Define racial trauma and its effects on children and youth of color;
2) Identify strategies to assist children and youth of color in coping with racial stress and trauma; and
3) List strategies for having “the talk” with children and youth.
This course will be broadcasted and recorded via Zoom Meeting and uses PowerPoint presentation, lecture, and discussions for instruction. You must register by logging into your KHA Account before attending via Zoom.
